Teaching Experience In MMSU- SEA teacher Batch 10.2
Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), established on January 6, 1978, is a premier institution of higher learning in the Ilocos region of the Philippines. Named after Mariano Marcos, the father of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos. The first time I heard that I would spend my 28 days as a SEA-Teacher participants made me a little bit nervous. Choosing a university is one of the biggest decisions in life, and for me, Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) was more than just a school—it became my second home. I know from the first time I met my resource teacher and my fellow student friends, I would learn so much new and important things.
I started my journey in MMSU with observing the surroundings, as I am a foreigner try to adapt in the new place. I was invited to observe first before finally preparing a lesson plan and start teaching according to the predetermined schedule.
So, I started to work on my lesson plan. I got help from my friends here and they were really welcome me. I learn new things on how to make a good lesson plan and how to teach in a better way. Every afternoon, all of us will gather and do the evaluation. We did the evaluation by giving all the good things and some of the things that needed to be change for the better. With this, I learned that teachers must be a good-making decision person. Teachers must have the ability to understand students. And of course, the ability to control the class and make it a meaningful class. Also with our resource teacher’s guidance, all of us able to learn new things every day. All of the things that of course lead us to become a better teacher.
Well, after two weeks here, I got a sudden news. I have to do my teaching demonstration early. I only have two days to prepare for it. So, I got panic for a minute, but my resource teacher helped me and made my confidence full again. Therefore, I do all that I can to prepare, once again I got helped from my friends. I did everything that I could. I followed my lesson plan, my powerpoint and of course I kept in mind everything that my resource teacher has told me.
I did the teaching demo about Linear Inequalities. I started by playing a little game and make the students to be participative. The game is called “the stand up, sit down”, it was a really fun game and the students really excited. Then I followed up by giving them the lesson. They were really good on answering question, almost all my questions been answer correctly and by different students also. I continued by giving them examples of the problem. We did the first and second problem together. The rest, they did it on their own. Some needed help but most were already good. My favorite part was when they were competing to go infront and do the work. I really love the energy, it was a really unforgettable moments in my life. Although I was struggle, but with all the help I get, I am able to pull this off. I perform my teaching and I am happy for the result. I am really grateful that I could meet such a supportive resource teacher and also supportive friends in here. They made me a better teacher and this experience is the one that I will cherish forever.
After I finished with teaching, I got the opportunity to watch the Tan-ok festival. It was a once in a lifetime experience. The people that prepared it really did a wonderful job. I was really amazed and could not take my eyes of the performance. I really don’t want it to be over but I guess nothing good last forever.
In my last weeks here, we practice our cultural dancing as we will perform it during the sendoff party. Because our times here will come to an end my friends and I and also our resource teachers went to spend our remaining time together. We went to have dinner and after that we play fun games and shared some of the heartful story. That night I really think that we have come so far to the point that we could share our broken story without hesitation. We learnt a lot that night and the only thing that ruined the night was time. If we could have more time then we will have so much more to talk about.
Finally, As I near the end of my journey at MMSU, I can’t help but feel grateful. This university has given me so much more than just a life lesson—it has given me experiences, knowledge, and memories that will stay with me forever. MMSU has prepared me for the challenges ahead, and I step into the future with confidence, knowing that I carry the lessons and values from all the people I met here.
For those who are considering MMSU, my advice is simple: embrace every moment. Get involved, push yourself beyond your limits, and make the most of everything this university has to offer. MMSU is not just an institution; it is a community, a family, and a place where dreams come true.
The last thing I want to say is, Philippines will held a special place in my heart. Every moment and every experience I will always remember it and cherish it forever. Thank you for everyone that I met in here, Prof. Fe Erlinda D. Ibalio and Prof. Jeanette G. Dials. My resource teacher, Ms. Hazel Marianne Mariano, and all of my friends from Math teaching Intern, sir Jim, sir R-Jay, ma’am Kate, ma’am Glaiza, and ma’am Jeandra. And of course, our student buddy sir God-Given and ma’am Dawn.
Thank you very much.
